After analyzing thousands of school social media pages over the last 5 years, I’ve come to identify one key factor.
This factor will determine – hands-down – whether the school district has a successful social media presence.
So what is the answer?
What does every school need to have successful social media?
A person dedicated to staying on top of the game – to continually learn – and to consistently push for out-of-the-box thinking when it comes to telling your school’s story.
After all, social media is not something that you just learn, and then you’re good to go forever.
It’s always changing – sometimes daily! If you don’t continue to keep up with those changes, your school will be left behind in regard to the true engagement that you can have with social media.
But where does that happen?
How do school employees involved with social media stay on top of their game?
Well, I have a few ideas.
- Connecting with other school communications professionals
- Joining #K12PRchat that happens on Twitter every other Tuesday night
- Listening to podcasts
- Reading blogs (thanks for reading this one!)
- Watching other schools’ Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages
- Attending online webinars. Follow #SocialSchool4EDU on Facebook. I often host free webinars, and I don’t want you to miss out!
- Going to conferences for school public relations – like NSPRA (I’d love to see you in DC in July of 2019) or your local state chapters like MinnSPRA in Minnesota, WSPRA in Wisconsin or OKSPRA in Oklahoma. You can get a list of all stat chapters with this link.
- Following businesses and brands to see what they are doing, and then applying those strategies to your school.
I’m sure you can think of even more ideas, but that’s a great start! That all can take a lot of time. Trust me – I do it full time running this business.
However, your team probably doesn’t have enough hours in the week to keep up with it all!
So how can you make it manageable?
Join a community that is set up to support your social media expert. A place to vent frustrations, ask for ideas, get help with “how to” questions, and seek support when dealing with negative comments.
A special corner of the internet to connect with people who understand your role, your time constraints, and your struggles in getting content from other staff at your school.
We already had that with our internal team at #SocialSchool4EDU; we manage social media for more than 70 schools and have a team of 30 dedicated social media account managers. We share issues, ideas, and training with each other all the time!
Now we want to make that community and support available to all schools! That’s why created a brand new online membership group.
This group is specially designed for Interactive, on-demand training and support for your team of school communicators responsible for social media.
You’re invited to have 3 members from your school or district sign up for this membership group for one low price of $795 per year. We have more than 100 members already. They love the ideas and support already flowing through the group. Listen to what one member has to say:
In just one live office-hours session and web meeting, I have already surpassed my expectations with joining this group! After your web session and tips, I was quickly able to verify my page – I had no idea this was something I needed to do.” ~ Allison Sliva, Chief Communications Officer, Bay City Independent School District, Texas
Who is this membership program for?

Or anyone else involved in social media for K12 schools!
So what will you do? As I see it, you’re standing at a crossroads.
You have two roads to choose from.
The road to the left is the road you’ve been traveling on. It’s rocky and bumpy – you’re unsure of what works. You’re struggling to find content to post. You never have enough time to do a good job with social media. Your reach is going down.
Or you can go down the road to the right…
This road is paved and smooth. There are just a few people on this road, but their schools’ social media is getting more engagement. Their reach is going up and they are spending less time but getting more praise for their efforts. They have less stress because they have instant access to others who can help them as issues come up.
The road on the right is the one you go down when you join our online membership group.
So choose the right road – join now!
