Andrea and Abby,
I really enjoyed Abby’s podcast, the value in dropping into classes and grabbing quick stories is so positive, I have done this in the past. One of the challenges we often face, especially with younger students is privacy, specifically children who appear on a “do not photograph” list. I think more than ever we (staff) are nervous to snap pictures of kids, knowing that we then have an extra layer of figuring our firstly who they are, and secondly checking lists to see if we can post them. Do you have strategies to keep this simple?
Great question, Andy! I had a district share this strategy with me years ago. They have their classrooms include a sticker or sign on the door. If all students in the classroom can be pictured – it is a camera, like the Instagram symbol. If there are students who can’t be pictured in the room, they don’t have a sticker or they might have one with a camera with an X through it. Then you’ll know to ask in that classroom. We stress that teachers should know which children can’t be photographed, so a quick question to the teacher might help – but if they are in the middle of a lesson, this isn’t so easy. Having that visual que can help!
